Community Cancer Outreach

Health & Wellness

The Health & Wellness program was established to assist our hospital in achieving its goal of improving the health status of our community. Our goals are to:

  • help reduce health care costs for individuals and businesses
  • offer a broad range of community health education programs
  • provide prevention and screening programs to the communities we serve

Health & Wellness supports the hospital’s cancer program by providing cancer education, prevention and screening events. Learn more about health and wellness programs.

Breast Cancer Screening Program

Our Breast Cancer Screening Program offers screenings, breast self-examination instruction, and access to treatment for low-income women 40 years of age and older living in Montgomery County. Additionally, our program offers individual education, financial assistance, and support to patients diagnosed with breast cancer. The program is available through a partnership with the Montgomery County Women's Cancer Control Program and the State of Maryland Breast and Cervical Diagnosis and Treatment Program.

Inpatient Tobacco Cessation Program

The Inpatient Tobacco Cessation Program offers counseling and support for smoking cessation to all inpatients at Washington Adventist Hospital. Established in 2002, and funded by the Montgomery County Cigarette Restitution Fund, the tobacco cessation program strives to enable our patients to quit smoking through nicotine replacement therapy and regular follow-up services.

2009 Statistics
  • 1,492 patients were counseled for tobacco cessation
  • 38% reported being smoke-free at three months
  • 33% reported being smoke-free at six months
