Preparing for Your Sleep Study

Our Sleep Services Program at Washington Adventist Hospital can help diagnose your sleep problems. Our experts often recommend an overnight sleep study and/or polysomnogram at our center. Every sleep study is conducted using the most technologically advanced equipment available to ensure prompt and accurate results. Our facilities offer patients a relaxing environment for sleeping, with comfortable homelike bedroom settings. This page has been created to help you prepare for your study.

We Offer Multiple Types of Sleep Studies

Preparing for Your Sleep Study

After scheduling your appointment, you’ll be mailed an information packet that must be completed and brought with you to your diagnostic test. The information in the packet helps ensure a prompt and accurate study as well as providing you with specific instructions on how to prepare for your test. Please carefully review all of the information and contact us at 1-800-264-1487 with any questions or concerns.

What to Expect During Your Sleep Study

When you arrive, a professional sleep technologist will review your paperwork, explain the test and the equipment, and show you to your private room. Time will be given for you to relax and prepare for your study, and then the technologist will set up the monitoring equipment for your test, including recording sensors and belts.

The technologist will monitor your test from a nearby control room and will be readily available to assist you throughout the night to make your laboratory experience comfortable and safe.

What to Expect After Your Sleep Study

A Board Certified sleep specialist will review your results and forward a report to your physician two to three days after your study date. You should make a follow-up appointment with your referring physician to discuss your test results and treatment options. Your doctor may also request that you schedule a formal consultation with one of our sleep specialists to discuss your results.

Treatment Options

For sleep apnea, treatment options include weight loss, CPAP (a mask worn at night connected to a small air compressor), surgery, or dental appliance. For narcolepsy and periodic movements of sleep, medication usually is very effective. For insomnia, sleep hygiene measures and judicious use of sleeping pills are usually very helpful. Your physician or one of our sleep specialists can direct you to the appropriate treatment.
